Councillor Mia Jones of the Liberal Democrat Party, Chester City Council, was recently appointed to the Government's high profile Equalities Task force.

Mia Jones has been a Councillor since 2000 and became a Councillor so she could be a local voice for residents in the local area within Chester. She sits on the council’s Environment Scrutiny Committee.

For Mia the rewards of being an elected member of a council are the ability to help people, the chance to influence the decision making process and to promote equality and tackle injustice.

"My biggest challenge is unblocking the bureaucracy when campaigning for issues at senior levels, particularly in cases which require urgent action and attention."

Mia is self-employed within the field of marketing; her ethnic background is Chinese.

Chinese Liberal Democrats congratulate Barack Obama, President-elect on his landslide victory in the US elections on 5 November and hail his success as an inspiration to ethnic minority groups across the world.

“There is a new optimism and a sea change in politics that may well travel across the Atlantic. Obama’s win is a signal to all of us in ethnic minority communities that we can play a strong role in politics and become a positive force for change,” 
says Linda Chung, Chair of Chinese Liberal Democrats, herself recently elected as a councillor in Hampstead. 
 
“The Chinese and SE Asian communities in Britain have traditionally kept quiet and avoided standing up for themselves politically,” agrees Merlene Emerson, a Singaporean-born British Chinese and Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the Liberal Democrats in Hammersmith.

Film Makers Wanted!
Let’s mobilise the British Chinese population!

Brief:
The British Chinese Project is a voluntary based organization. We aim to elevate British Chinese’s profile in the UK. 

The British Chinese Project would like to commission a series of TV advertisements to be shown on Chinese TV/Radio channels (English, Mandarin and Cantonese), Chinese online media and promotional DVD for Chinese communities to encourage eligible Chinese voters to register and vote. The target audience is the general Chinese living, working and studying in the UK. The theme of the film should be related to their daily life and problems. 

Deadlines:
  • The submission deadline for one page treatment and budget of the production is 9 November 2008. 
  • Pitching sessions on 11 November 2008. 
  • Project completion deadline is 10 December 2008.

Deliverables:
  • 3 x 30 seconds TV Adverts 
  • 1 x 3-5 minutes version for DVD and online streaming. 
  • Must be in Mandarin, Cantonese and English
  • HD/ DV Formats are acceptable (16:9)
  • Masters on DVD and Tape

Submission Attachments:
  • Brief information and biographies of filmmakers
  • Must be able to demonstrate previous work

The final selection will be judged by the BC Panel based on three main key criteria: 
  • Effectiveness of the Adverts
  • Cost of the Production 
  • Ability of Execution

The Electoral Commission has put out a new advert to encourage people to register to vote. If you are not registered, you cannot vote.
